Attorney Butler recently spoke to a Raleigh workers compensation lawyer, and we were surprised by where the direction of the conversation went. We asked the attorney about their use of a call to action (CTA) on their website and had a fascinating discussion.
That conversation led to the development of this post, because we suspect that some lawyers out there don’t know what a CTA is or how important it is in converting website visitors into clients.
What’s a Call to Action?
A call to action is a line of text on your website and web pages that tell the reader what to do. It should tie into the content on the page. Basically, a call to action tells the reader to take a next step after reading through the content on the web page.
Here’s an example: A potential client arrives on a landing page about child custody issues during the divorce process. The client reads through the entire page. After completing, they feel like they’ve learned a lot, but they don’t know what they are supposed to do next.
At the bottom of the page, there should be a line of text that tells the reader to reach out to a lawyer for help dealing with child custody issues.
You can also have call-to-action buttons built into the design of your website. This makes it very easy for a website visitor to take that next step with just a click of the button.
Why Is a Call to Action So Important?
A call to action is important because you can lose clients if you don’t tell your web visitors what to do after landing on your page. They may read your page and then leave to do a search for a lawyer, because they don’t realize that you are a lawyer and that you can help them.
Keep in mind that when people arrive on your website or landing pages, they may not immediately know what the page is. They could have arrived on your website because someone shared a post, or through social media, or through a search for information related to law but not necessarily a search for a lawyer. You need a call to action to help get these visitors to make the choice to call your office.
